How much does a baby panda weigh?

4.54 pounds, it looks like. Or kilos? I don't know what measurement is used for pandas.

Panda news seems to be slow these days, but Jason O has sent in a great one: a new baby panda has been born at the San Diego Zoo. This baby is the sixth for its mother, Bai Yun, who is now the world record holder for Most Pandas Birthed. Congratulations!

Pandas are #4 out of 9 worst moms

According to this article on Mental_Floss. Their M.O. is to ignore their weakest babies. Why not? I mean, look at this thing:

Large man, small panda

Panda Correspondent Trevor draws our attention to this report of basketball sensation Yao Ming visiting baby pandas in China. To quote: "Today Yao Ming went to that same panda sanctuary that everyone goes to, to pose for the same panda-on-lap photo that everyone poses for, wearing a buttoned-up leather jacket and turtleneck combo that I don't think anyone has worn before."

BONUS:
Deadspin has also conveniently done a mashup of what it would look like if Tim Tebow had a baby with the panda on Yao Ming's lap:
Isn't the world a better place now?

Dreaming about pandas (or, when you know you've had a panda blog for too long)

So, last night, I had a dream. Panda blog co-founder Devora and I were roaming around town when we stumbled upon a young Asian family--Mom, Dad, and two-year-old quadruplets--and they were all dressed up in panda suits (for some occasion or the other), masks and all. It was too adorable for life, and of course we stopped them to take a picture for panda blog. ALAS, it was a dream, and no such photograph exists. Luckily panda correspondent Trevor shared this photo recently, so the post needn't go pictureless.
