perhaps because licorice vaguely resembles bamboo?
this was an impulse buy [for obvious reasons] at the check-out counter at trader joe's this afternoon. i don't like black licorice, but boy do i like pandas.
from the back of the box:

mmm mmm mmm.
this panda is almost all too human looking
in an extremely, extremely creepy way. also, it's a wind-up toy.

my mom asked me to look through the game closet today to see if there were any games i would like to keep (hell yeah there are) and i came across a double-set of cards given to me as a present as a child...back in my koala years. now, the animal of the set that stands out is the panda:
